Battery, fans, and overnight indexing

Embedding every photo and PDF is heavy — fans and energy impact during the first pass are expected. DigUp 0.6.1 ships scheduled indexing hours and pause controls so you can keep search all day without indexing all day. Sourced from #68, #3, #22, closed #26. Not affiliated.

During first pass vs idle

StateWhat to expectWhat to do
First index / big folder addHigh CPU, fans, Activity Monitor energy impact — embeddings + media.Plug in if possible; or pause; or restrict to overnight hours.
Quiet / no new filesShould settle. If energy stays 500+ after main pass (#68), gather samples for upstream.Confirm schedule is on; pause; check leftover helpers (#22).

Controls: schedule vs pause

ControlWhereEffect
Index only set hoursSettings → Folders (0.6.1)Indexing runs in the window; search still works all day.

Force Quit helpersActivity MonitorIf DigUp quit but helpers keep CPU (#22); then reopen DigUp cleanly.

Numbered steps

  1. Update to DigUp 0.6.1+ (brew install --cask arahim3/tap/digup or DMG).
  2. Open Settings → Folders → enable index only during set hours (pick an overnight window that fits you).
  3. On battery: use menu-bar Pause during meetings or travel.
  4. After a large first pass finishes, leave DigUp open but confirm indexing is idle before judging “always drains.”
  5. If helpers stay hot after quit: Activity Monitor → quit DigUp-related processes → relaunch once.
  6. Still abnormal after a quiet night? Attach energy samples / logs on #68 or #3 (redact paths).
